Crafting your artist statement

Below are tips and sample artist statements to support you in writing what you want to say.

Tips for Artists Statement:
Think of your statement as answering these five questions in one flowing paragraph:

  1. What is your theme?

  2. Why does it matter to the city/community?

  3. What symbols or imagery did you use?

  4. What is your style?

  5. What do you want people to feel when they see it?

ARTIST STATEMENT SAMPLE

For this traffic box, I wanted to celebrate the theme of “Connections in Motion.” Orlando is a city where technology, culture, and community intersect, and I aimed to capture that energy through vibrant patterns and symbolic imagery. The design incorporates flowing lines that resemble circuits and pathways, representing the networks that connect people across neighborhoods. Interwoven within these paths are symbols of Orlando’s identity: the iconic Lake Eola swans, oranges representing Florida’s agricultural roots, and abstract bursts of light symbolizing innovation and creativity.

My artistic style blends geometric abstraction with bold color fields, so the design is both modern and approachable. The traffic box becomes a visual landmark that reflects the spirit of Orlando as a city that honors its history while embracing progress. The composition concludes with a radiant horizon, symbolizing a collective, hopeful future for all who pass by.
